A
Healing Treatment for Your Mind, Body and Soul - By Genevre
Poirier
I
have had a chronic sore shoulder for many years and have seen
too many doctors to number. Each doctor couldn't find the cause
of my pain. I had heard of "energy healing" but never
really considered it, until I met body worker Lekha Shah. She
made it sound inviting and two acquaintances couldn’t
say enough good things about it. "What have you got to
lose?" a friend asked. "If anything, you’ll
feel more relaxed and sleep better." I hadn’t slept
well in weeks. So when Shah offered to give me a free session
of Mind/Body Harmony, as she calls it, I couldn’t say
no.
The
room is warm and emits a soft glow. The walls are sponge painted
a light purple and a sheer veil covers the window.
I am tired but can’t rest as I lie fully dressed on the
massage table. Lekha Shah slowly begins to move her hands about
four inches over my body as I explain that my right shoulder
hurts from time to time and lately I haven’t been able
to sleep on that side.
Shah
touches my shoulder softly yet firmly and inquires about my
injury. I explain that I haven’t
had an accident. It just flares up periodically. I close my
eyes and Shah asks about when the pain started and what was
happening in my life at the time. The pain in my right shoulder
started about six years ago after my mother died.
I
am silent for a while but tears flow across my cheeks. Shah
continues
to work over my body and occasionally touches my shoulder
gently. It is a comfortable silence and I completely relax.
Slowly
I begin to talk about my mother and my feelings. An hour
passes and when I open my eyes I feel pleasantly exhausted.
I could
go right to sleep. My body feels heavy and full.
Shah
recommends that I drink lots of water and to go home
and sleep if I have nothing to do. I rotate my arm in a circle,
and NOTHING.
I DON’T FEEL PAIN. In fact, I don’t feel anything
at all. My shoulder moves freely. Shah assures me she doesn’t
work miracles and that I did it myself.
"I just create
an atmosphere of safety and respect", says Shah. According
to Shah, body workers act as facilitators to guide people through
their emotional blocks that cause physical pain. "Emotional
pain manifests itself in the body "says Shah, "and
people know what is wrong with them. They just need someone
to guide them through the process.
"Mind/Body Harmony is
a form of "touch therapy" that also works with one’s
energy field. Shah, along with many others, believes it is
possible to manipulate this invisible energy for healing with
touch therapies, such as Mind/Body Harmony. "It works
on the body and mind. It’s about balance," says
Shah. "Mind/Body Harmony is the gentle art of conscious
and intuitive touch that invites the body’s innate healing
powers to be released." It combines various healing practices
including energy work, touch therapy and listening compassionately
to the client. "It promotes the healing of the whole person--
physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually," replies
Shah.
"The basic principle behind Mind/Body Harmony is
that the body knows what it needs. The body holds all the memories
of what has happened to it, and the body never lies," explains
Shah. "The body is always waiting for an invitation to
speak and be heard. Mind/Body Harmony allows us to be there
for the body, totally respecting it, and asking it, "What
can we do?"
Born
in India and having lived in East Africa and Europe, Shah has
had the opportunity to combine
her Eastern background, with its holistic and
intuitive perspective with more rational Western concepts. "It allows me to
blend a range of therapies into a comprehensive solution tailored
to each individual’s unique needs," she says.
"What
I love about what I do is that it is so diverse. It’s
so holistic. I can approach a person in so many different ways.
Every time a person comes their needs are different," explains
Shah. "With Mind/Body Harmony, I start by touching the
person and feeling their energy. Then intuitively things come
into my mind.....questions, feelings or pictures. I get a sense
of what is going on with their energy field. I listen to what
the body is trying to say, and what it wants me to do."
"For
this process to work, I have to be completely open and non-judgmental.
It’s like I am the channel in which the information can
pass through from the other body to mine. We often unlock
the mind but the body is still locked in; we are such a mental
race," points out Shah. "We process things quickly
in the head, but the body functions differently and often takes
longer to let go and heal."
Shah
was once called to the hospital to help out a friend. "Jane’s" friend
hurt her leg. "This lady was a dancer and didn’t
want to have surgery on the leg, which is what the doctor had
wanted" remembers Shah. "So "Jane" called
me to help. I had never met the injured lady before and knew
nothing about her, but when I touched her leg, I saw, or should
say sensed, all the torn ligaments and damage to the leg. As
I worked on her I started to cry, and couldn’t stop!
Right there in the hospital! I saw her childhood problems flash
before my eyes. She told me I was crying all the tears she
had held in!
This lady allowed Shah to work on her, and
she never needed surgery. The wound healed very quickly.
"I
know that what I do really works because I myself have gone
through it," says Shah. "Everything I did (learning
and exploring different healing methods) I did first for myself.
As I learned the techniques to help myself, I wanted to help
other people. But still, my top value in life is my own personal
growth, because if I am not growing, I can’t help anybody.
I am always open to exploring different ways to help myself
and others."
Shah
has spent the past 16 years exploring and learning many aspects
of personal growth and self-knowledge.
